20 Riders arrived at Jolly Roger Restaurant on Sunday for the BVI
Mountain Bike club's 4th race of the 2008 Last Stop Sports
Championship.

This year's race took a departure from the punishing climbing around
Belmont Estate and Steel Point and instead took riders on the 38.5
mile route to the airport and back taking in the climbs at Pieces of
Eight and Slaney hill as well as the coast road climbs.

In the Expert category a group of 4 riders, Chris Ghiorse, Gareth
Thomas, Andrew "Tubes" Thompson and Mark Smith made an early
break from the rest of the pack and worked together to build a
significant lead before the first of the climbs. The 4 stayed close
together over Pieces of Eight, then Chris & Mark opened a small gap
on Slaney, but were quickly caught through Road Town.

It wasn't until Sophie Bay Hill, when Mark Smith suffered a jumping
chain, that the 4 were separated and Smith got left behind on the
climb. Some hard work followed until Smith managed to catch the
others just past the college.

The four remained as they were to the airport and over the climbs
back to town and although there were some attempts by each rider to
break free, the four ended up the race with a sprint finish at West End
with Chris Ghiorse taking the win over Andrew Thompson with Gareth
Thomas and Mark Smith sharing 3rd place in a too close to call finish.

Tim Clipston put in an impressive effort to drop Darrel Christopher Jr
to take 5th place and a fast ride from Sally Blackmore put her in front
of Darrel to by nearly 4 minutes. Jim Cullimore proved that the
Veteran racers can still challenge the younger riders, whilst Antony
"Chopstrong" Spencer struggled with an unfamiliar bike.

Intermediate rider Mike Doyle took the victory over an unlucky Andy
Stanbury who flatted over the shorter course to Purcell.

The social class was a battle of the ladies with Rebecca Smith edging
out Adele Perrot and Anna Kinnersly to take the win.

The club would like to thank all the Volunteers, BVI Red Cross, Last
Stop Sports, Road Town Whole, VI Block and Caribbean Insurers.

The next race in the Last Stop Sports Championship will be the
Corsairs Bar One Tuff Mudda on May 25th. For more details visit

30 March 2008

Gareth Thomas took the honors in the 2nd Mountain Bike Race of the
2008 Last Stop Sports Championship with a 2 minute gap over Mark
Smith.

Peter LeBlanc set the early pace on his bigger geared Cyclocross
bike with Gareth and Mark spinning a high cadence to try and keep
up. The group quickly pulled away from the main bunch on the road
to West End, however Peter couldn't keep  with Mark & Gareth on the
first climb around the bottom of Mount Carmel and it was Mark &
Gareth who were first to tackle the punishing climb up Towers. Both
riders had to dismount near the top as the gradient became too much.

Chris Mann visiting from Texas gave Peter & Darrel Christopher Jr a
challenge for positions on the Towers climb.

However it was Gareth who was first to crest the peak and he quickly
opened up a gap over Mark on the descent, Mark who's front brake
had failed was having to descend cautiously and by the time they
reached Cox Heath the Gap had increased considerably and
remained over Pieces of Eight hill and Slaney Hill with Gareth
crossing the finish line at Nanny Cay in a time of 1 Hour 1 Minute &
Eleven Seconds, Mark rode hard to try and close the gap but could
only manage 2nd place 2 minutes behind Gareth with Peter taking
3rd in a time of 1hr 10minutes.

Jim Cullimore & Ian Mann battled for position the whole race, with Jim
taking 7th Spot in an exciting sprint finish.

The social class had 4 entrants with Mike Doyle taking 1st Place and
Nicole Charles edgins 2nd over Colin Corea on the flatter course,
Anna Kinnersly had a flat after the first mile and did not finish.

Darrel Junior took the honours as the only Junior rider  and Tim
Clipstone competed on his own in the Intermediate Class on his Road
Bike.

Mark Smith took the first win of the Last Stop Sports 2008 BVI MTB
Club Championship with a convincing win in Sunday's Loose
Mongoose Cross Country.

New Riders Eben Meyers, Charlie Clipstone and Tevin Corea battled
it out in the newly formed cadet class and Colin Corea, Adele Perrot
and Nicole Charles also raced for the first time in the Social category,
Rebecca Smith was the sole competitor in the intermediate class.

The race took place on a revised course from previous years races
with the climb to the Prison and then on to Nottingham missing from
the lap, there was no climbing on the partly paved, partly dirt 2 mile
lap. The course suited the heavier Smith who normally loses out to
the lighter riders on the climbs but is more suited to flat courses and
his off road experience paid dividends and it was the dirt section
where he made up the most time.

However from the start it was Phillipe Leroy who set the early pace
and quickly opened up a gap on Andrew "Tubes" Thompson and a
chasing Smith, but by the Second lap Leroy and Smith were battling
with each other  and Smith took his opportunity when Leroy flatted on
the 3rd Lap. From there it was Smith who set the pace over the 15 lap
race and Tubes had to settle for 2nd Place with Peter LeBlanc taking
the 3rd place honors.

The cadet class was formed specifically to encourage youth riders
into the sport and Eben Meyers took the honors in the 5 Lap race,
with Charlie Clipstone coming in 2nd and Tevin Corea 3rd. Mark
Smith said "It's good to see the youth coming out and taking part in
these races, these are the riders of the future and It would good to
see a race with 10-20 youth riders competing in it in the future".

The BVI Mountain Bike club also recently held  a Technical Skills
training morning for new riders and plans to hold several more
throughout the year. "I'd like to show new riders what they and their
bikes are capable of and give them the skills to ride safely both on
and off road, these workshops are key to the continued success of
cycling in the BVI and encouraging new riders into the sport".
